Abstract

COSTA, Tabajara G. da; GAIDA, Flavio  and  BIER, Luiz C.. Isolation and characterization of cariogenic streptococcus in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. Rev. Saúde Pública [online]. 1972, vol.6, n.2, pp. 167-170. ISSN 0034-8910.  http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/S0034-89101972000200006.

The presence of Streptococcus resembling Streptococcus mutans supposed caries inductors, was demonstrated in on environment. Colonial morphology and biochemical characteristics of these microorganisms suggest some identity to those already, demonstrated as cariogenic to animals and humans throughout the world. These observations brought some support to the hypothesis that caries would be a bacteriologically specific disease.

Keywords : Streptococcus, cariogenic; Dental caries; Streptococcus mutans.
