Natural infection of silvatic rodent Oryzomys capito laticeps in an enzootic focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis in S. Paulo State, Brazil, is reported. The infection was due to the Leishmania braziliensis braziliensis and identification was reached by experimental inoculation of the isolated strain in hamsters. By the first time that rodent is incriminated as natural reservoir of the mucocutaneous form of leishmaniasis.
