The smoking habits of women hospitalized in the obstetrics ward of a general hospital in the city of S. Paulo are described as well as the patients' knowledge about the effects of smoking during pregnancy and the orientation received during this period. Some guidelines for health education are presented and the different levels of educational programs on smoking are considered.
