A brief account of the history of the Cuban public health during the colonial times as a historical frame to approach José Martí was set forth. The personalities that Martí quoted or omitted in his extensive writen works were underlined. It was insisted on the fact that he knew about the participation of Cuban physicians in 1868-1878 independence war. Finally, the importance that Martí attached to the role of physicians in the last independence war against Spain as well as his final recommendation "to cure with the miracle of iodine and of tenderness that is indeed another miracle".
